Librarian Review of Community Helpers
The Community Helpers series introduces children to various jobs in their communities. Each title features one job, what the worker does, and the skills and equipment needed. Each book opens with a simple overview of the worker solving a problem or performing the steps needed in the job. The titles also present easy to understand explanations of what each job entails that would be great for a lesson on occupations. Electricians shows readers that electricians need to be very careful because electricity can be dangerous. In Bakers, the bakers need to be precise, creative, and good with details such as carefully measuring ingredients. Flight Attendants are featured as good communicators and decision makers, but also polite and strong, as they need to ensure safety and comfort on flights. The title Hairstylists offers a look at the various places hairstylists work, such as on shows and movies. In Truck Drivers, readers can discover the different tools, such as a logbook and radio, that the drivers use while on the road. Welders reveals that welders also must be very precise, and help build the world through following plans and welding neat lines. The series is filled with attractive photographs and checklists to help readers in expanding their understanding of the job. Each title also includes a glossary of terms, index, and key resources to learn more about the jobs. The simple text and short sentences are intended for younger children, and make this series a perfect choice for a discussion about jobs in the community.
