Educator Review of Ocean Animals

This series explores ocean animals for the emerging reader. Each title draws in the reader with a bright cover highlighting a large, clear picture of the animal of focus. The animals explored in this series include crabs, dolphins, jellyfish, octopuses, sea horses, sea stars, sea turtles, sharks, sting rays, and whales. Complete with a table of contents at the beginning, and a fact page and glossary at the end, the books in this series provide an excellent first look at nonfiction print resources that early elementary students will be able to grasp. From the bright pictures, to the interesting facts, and the helpful infographics included throughout, these books provide a print resource that even our littlest readers can engage with. In the included book Crabs, students will learn not only parts of the crab, with helpful arrows pointing to the various body parts of the crab, they also learn interesting facts about how crabs move, what crabs eat, and what happens when a crab’s shell gets too small and they need to molt. As a school librarian I am constantly looking for resources that our early elementary teachers can use in the classroom to promote nonfiction print concepts with highly engaging content. This series fits the bill. It’s definitely a must for any elementary school library!
